National Park Service Announces Cherry Blossom Peak Bloom Prediction

March 6, 2019

If you’re looking forward to seeing the cherry blossoms this year, you won’t have to wait much longer.

D.C.’s cherry blossoms will bloom between April 3 and April 6, the National Park Service predicted Wednesday.

Peak bloom occurs when 70 percent of blossoms are open. While the NPS forecasts when the blossoms will open, the weather impacts the actual dates.

The blossoms are usually mostly open between the final week of March and the first week of April. However, extreme warm or cool weather caused the blossoms to bloom as early as March 15 in 1990 and as late as April 18 in 1958.

The annual cherry blossom festival will be held from March 20 to April 14. The blossoms are located near the Tidal Basin and National Mall.
