D.C. Mayor Responds to New Zealand Shooting

March 15, 2019

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said police will be “vigilant” around mosques in the District following a shooting in New Zealand that killed 49 people and left numerous others injured.

An armed gunman started shooting during a prayer service at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday, The Washington Post reported. Another mosque was also reportedly targeted.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern considered the shooting a terrorist attack. Police have four people in custody, according to the report, which states that three of four were “believed” to have been connected to the violent act.

“We renounce hate in all of its forms & we remain #UnitedtoLove with our Muslim sisters and brothers as we all mourn those who were lost,” Bowser said.

Bowser said her office has communicated with local faith leaders.
