5 Large Sea Turtles Found Dead Near Ocean City After Hurricane Dorian

September 9, 2019

Six loggerhead sea turtles were found Saturday near Ocean City, Maryland as a result of the wind and waves associated with Hurricane Dorian.

The large turtles appeared along the Delaware coast at Lewes Beach, the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute said. Five were dead when they were found.

The lone surviving turtle was more than 3 feet long and weighed between 350 and 400 pounds. It suffered from a pre-existing boat propeller injury, the agency said.

The turtle was also underweight and debilitated.

After receiving treatment at the MERR facility, the turtle was transported to Baltimore’s National Aquarium, where it will receive long-term rehab.

The agency said anyone who sees a marine mammal or sea turtle on Delaware beaches should report it to MERR’s 24-hour hotline at 302-228-5029.
