Rabies Awareness Week: How To Protect Yourself And Your Pets

September 24, 2019

It’s rabies awareness week in Virginia, and Arlington County is urging pet owners to remain vigilant with fall arriving.

Rabies can be transmitted with direct contact with saliva or tissue from an infected animal, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Rabies can impact humans who have experienced an animal bite, though it can also be spread without a bite.

In 2017, there were 4,454 rabies cases in the U.S. reported to the CDC.

To prevent the spread of rabies, Arlington County recommends getting pets vaccinated, staying away from wild animals, keeping pets on leashes, reporting animal bites or strange behavior and seeking immediate medical care if bitten.
