Two out-of-service Metro trains collided Monday morning, prompting lengthy delays that disrupted the morning commute and backed up some station platforms.

About 12:54 a.m. between the Foggy Bottom and Farragut West stations, the two trains were involved in a rear-end crash while traveling in the same direction on the same track, Metro said.

The trains were being moved to their rail yards when the incident occurred.

The train operators on both trains requested medical aid for non-life-threatening injuries, Metro said. One has been released from the hospital. Nobody else was on board the trains at the time of the incident.

Because of the incident, Metro said orange, silver and blue line trains might be delayed throughout the day. Trains are scheduled to run every 15 minutes, even during rush hour.
