Sexual assault victims in Virginia are forced to spend hours traveling due to a shortage of qualified nurses and hospitals able to provide sexual assault exams, according to a new study.

Fewer than 200 of the state’s 100,000 registered nurses are credentialed forensic nurses, the study found.

Sixteen of Virginia’s 122 licensed hospitals offer the necessary forensic exams, the Associated Press reported.

The Virginia General Assembly Joint Commission on Health Care requested the study be completed.
