2 Dead in Respiratory Outbreak at Virginia Assisted Living Facility

July 12, 2019

Two people died and 20 more were hospitalized as a result of a respiratory illness at a long-term care facility in Springfield, Virginia.

The Fairfax County Health Department is investigating Greenspring, where 55 of 263 residents have suffered from respiratory symptoms, the department said.

Symptoms varied from coughs to pneumonia. The two patients who died had been hospitalized with pneumonia and were adults with “complex medical problems,” according to the department.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the outbreak.

The facility hasn’t accepted new admissions, cancelled group activities and is keeping ill residents in their respective rooms.

The department said the incident is rare because comparable outbreaks usually occur in the winter and during flu seasons.
