3 Dead, 63 Sick in Outbreak at Virginia Long-Term Care Facility

July 17, 2019

A third person is dead as a result of the respiratory illness at the Greenspring long-term care facility in Springfield, Virginia.

Sixty-three of the residents at the facility became sick, the Fairfax County Health Department said, and 19 facility employees reported symptoms. There aren’t any new hospitalizations.

A preliminary investigation revealed two people died and 20 were hospitalized as a result of the outbreak.

The department said the incident is rare because outbreaks usually occur in the winter.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the outbreak, which began June 30.
