This Summer, Catch the Washington Kastles on Top of Union Market

April 16, 2019

Soon, you’ll be able to catch a tennis match on the top of Union Market.

The Washington Kastles tennis team is planning to construct a stadium on the roof of Union Market, the food hall located in the District’s NoMa neighborhood. The new facility will feature seven matches between July 15 and July 27.

"We are always thinking about how we can elevate the fan experience," Kastles owner Mark Ein said in a statement, "and we know many of our fans missed the summer outdoor environment that we had for our first six seasons. We looked all over the city for a place that would be spectacular and a neighborhood that would help create unforgettable summer evenings."

The Kastles said the season’s opening match will be the first event to happen on Union Market’s roof.

The stadium will initially feature 700 seats, the team said.

EDENS, which owns Union Market, is discussing eventually turning the rooftop into an 8,000-foot park and entertainment venue.

The stadium opens July 15, when the Kastles host the the Las Vegas Rollers. Venus Williams, Nick Kyrgios and Prince George’s County star Frances Tiafoe are all part of the team’s lineup.
